Pre-school & Kindergarten Programs, starting at 2.5 yrs. old. Early childhood provides a unique opportunity to learn a second (or third) language.
Italian School NJ offers the following classes for pre-school and Kindergarten (for all levels):
- CUCCIOLI: 2.5-3.5 years old
- COCCINELLE: 4 – 6 years old
Please note that placement in a different level and age group can be made based upon individual skill levels.
Italian School NJ has developed a play-based curriculum that evolves around age-appropriate activities and “full immersion”. It has been shown that students of this age in particular benefit from activities and lessons conducted solely in Italian, as it encourages them to express themselves and think in the language.
Lessons are “theme based”, focusing on vocabulary-building activities such as songs, visual aid games, art and crafts. “Themes” include greetings, numbers, colors, body parts, foods, seasons, family, animals, holidays and more.
Children will be also stimulated to express themselves in Italian through various activities such as “show and tell” or other games like “pretend plays”.
Lessons at the kindergarten level are structured similarly, but will be enhanced through the use of textbooks.
On the subject of bilingualism and ease of acquisition, it has been proven that children up to 6 years old have the most potential to learn languages. Research also shows that knowing another language and being aware of another culture enhances critical thinking and enhances mental creativity and flexibility. It also opens doors for opportunities later in life.
Our preschool and kindergarten lessons are geared toward students’ ages 2.5 to 6. Classes meet once a week for 14 weeks in the Fall, starting the first week of October, and 14 weeks in the Spring, starting right after the Fall semester, generally in mid-February or beginning of March.
Classes are suspended over the summer: only private and semiprivate tutoring is available.
Italian School NJ will be closed on Thanksgiving, weekend Christmas, Easter, Memorial Day weekend and other holidays or school breaks.
Private and Semi-Private lessons can be arranged on an individual basis at the convenience of the student.
